Family Building Blocks has two locations: Chelsea’s Place located on Lancaster Ave in Northeast Salem and Gracie’s Place located on Edgewater St in West Salem. Inside the walls, FBB offers theraputic classrooms for children and families. FBB also has an outreach program that is geared towards connecting, educating and supporting families who have yet to be plugged into the classrooms at FBB. Aside from these primary services, FBB also offers dependency treament court and supervised visitation programs that work with our City, County and State DHS systems. In 2011 over 858 children were served in these programs. In addition to children served inside the classroom there are approximately 140 children on the waiting list who recieve home visits, parent education services, emergency childcare, clothes closet and food boxes.

I have volunteered at FBB for over three years and currently sit on the Board of Directors. This organization is a complete blessing to our community. Personally, I have witnessed the first hand results of their programs and the impact it has for those involved in any level. Just being involved on a volunteer level, FBB has taught me a number of parenting nuggets that have helped me focus on the importance of early childhood development when parenting my three kiddos (4 year old twins and a 22 month old).

If you are interested in donating, volunteering or learning more about FBB you can visit www.familybuildingblocks.org/help.

Family Building Blocks also owns and operates Reruns for Kids, a local children’s clothing consignment store. Go check it out! www.familybuildingblocks.org/reruns.

Do you love wine? Well, if you do, then you need to check out this amazing benefit for Family Building Blocks. The 5th annual Uncorked Wine Auction will be held on May 12th. Get your tickets at uncorkedwineauction.com

Venti’s Taphouse customers spent the better part of the winter comparing four beer taster trays, with a winner emerging from each round. The four winners went to the finals two weeks ago: Lompoc, Seven Brides, Fort George and Anderson Valley each had a beer in the finals, but only one could emerge the winner. C Sons Greetings is a Winter-ized version of their C Note IPA with a maltier base malt to make the beer more of a winter style.

Many thanks to our thirsty Taphouse customers who voted enthusiastically and consumed twenty kegs of winter ale in pursuit of a winner. The course of winter is winding down, though there’s still a little chill in the air. The Taphouse will be tapping one last keg of winter ale and then it’ll be all over until the late fall when the holiday/winter beers return.

That kind of perseverence is admirable and the hard work, trust and faith has paid off and definitely garners a Venti’s Live Salem feature.

I feel like I know those involved w/ getting KMUZ off the ground because I’ve watched the efforts via social media — as well as seeing them at the State Fair, Clockworks and other events. It’s cool how that works. The progress has been fun to watch. And because it is a grass-roots effort, they have been creative and inspiring throughout the process. I cheered and “Liked” posts when KMUZ did a logo contest in 2009, when they got the call letters, when they got their antenna. I cheer KMUZ at the interesting programming they offer and even had fun being interviewed for the Sydney Show. Now we celebrate KMUZ and their new location in downtown Salem.

As a community-run, public radio station, KMUZ’s programming includes all-request shows, local news, reggae, country, talk and more. I got the scoop from Karen Holman, KMUZ founder:

We are KMUZ 88.5 FM, the non-commercial educational community FM radio station in the mid-Willamette Valley in Oregon. KMUZ is committed to providing a media outlet for those who are not given a voice in mainstream media—namely, locals (that’s you!) who are itching to create engaging public affairs or cultural arts programming. We also welcome DJs who would like to share their music. Virtually any genre goes, where the only limitation is that it can’t be heard on commercial radio. KMUZ is a brand-new station (first broadcast on Dec. 17, 2011) and so we are still evolving as people from the Mid-Willamette Valley join us to create exciting new programming. Have an idea but no experience? We provide free training and encourage our volunteers to be creative so that KMUZ can provide our community a wide array of interesting and unique shows. Check out the “Be a DJ” link.

Our city of license is Turner, OR and the general broadcast area reaches north into Salem, south to Albany, west to Monmouth, and east to Stayton. We also stream over the internet. The sponsoring non-profit organization for this radio station and FCC licensee is WINES (Willamette Information News & Entertainment Service), a new nonprofit that focuses on broadcasting local music, news & events in the mid-Valley. Since we have 501(c)(3) status, donations are tax-deductible. Please consider becoming a sustaining member (click the “Subscribe” PayPal link on the right), but a one-time donation also helps (via the “Donate” PayPal link). Check donations made out to KMUZ-FM can be mailed to us at P.O. Box 12038, Salem, OR 97309. If you are business, consider becoming an underwriter! Please contact outreach@kmuz.org for more information.

The station announced big news this week:

KMUZ is moving to downtown Salem! The new permanent location of the KMUZ studios will be at 245 Division Street NE, Suite 300 (former location of Allied Video Productions).

Now that they’re moving they are in need of underwriters, to help with costs. Underwriting – on-air mentions, compared to what you’dnormally pay on radio, this is a great deal and is tax-deductable. Businesses, organizations or individuals! Need to pay rent. The move will happen the next few days. Anyone who would like to offer help of any kind that would be related to our move, please contact Dave Hammock at dhammock@comcast.net.

Seeking furnishings, office supplies. A ream of paper. Check the wish list or ask about donations.

And, we race throughout the race season, May through October, competing with many teams from the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Entering races, and traveling to those events, adds up, $-wise.

In 2012, the year of the Water Dragon, we are asking for your support to help us travel to Victoria, BC in August for a really big race event.

Next year, the PDWPC hopes to add another race (or two) in Canada, a race in Tempe, Arizona, and races in San Francisco and San Diego.

We would love to count you among our supporters, and to include you in our ever-growing stellar list of sponsors. Please visit the PDWPC on the web at http://www.peacedragonwarriors.org to find out more about tax-deductible sponsorship opportunities!

I had to ask: “What is dragon-boating? Gimme the scoop.” My PDWPC Warrior friend Weisha replied with the following:

A 40′ dragon boat holds a team of 20 paddlers, a drummer/caller, and the steersperson or sweep.

Minimal equipment is required – each paddler needs only a paddle, a life vest, and a winning attitude.

Now imagine 35-75 teams gathered in one location, all with one thing in mind – bring home some bling!

Race events involve racing on a 500m course in 4 to 6-boat heats, giving 200% with total focus and effort,

with the goal of covering the course and being the 1st boat to cross the finish line in 2 minutes or less.

Race events mean fun, noise, fun, crowds, fun, community, fun, hard work, fun, pride, fun, bonding, fun, and FUN!

Practicing 3-5 hours a week, year-round, and traveling out of state or country, for the chance to race for a total of maybe 16 minutes over two days of racing – yes, dragon boaters are committed, comptetive, and a little crazy!

Tableside Whole Cone Hop Infusion at Venti’s

Want to “hoptimize” your Hefeweizen? Care to “dry-hop” your Dunkel? Why not?

Now available for your consideration: table side dry-hop infused beer. We take a whopping handful of hops of your choice and pack it into a French press full of your favorite beer, giving it a huge aroma and flavor of whole-cone hops. Just wait two to four minutes and very slowly push down the plunger, watching as the carbonation effervesces through the hops and draws out all that juicy hop flavor and aroma. Of course, this level of hop bitterness isn’t for everyone, but if you love hops; can you ever get enough lupulin?

24 oz. French Press with .7oz. of hops $10

Hop Choices/Flavor Profiles:

Columbus/Tomahawk/Zeus: (CTZ): One of the “Three Cs” along with Cascade and Centennial. This hop is citrusy and slightly woody and imparts a resinous quality to a beer.

Columbia: Floral, fruity, earthy and spicy with a lemon zing.

Cascade: A Northwest favorite with a distinct citrus/grapefruit aroma.

Chinook: Slightly spicy and very piney.

Please push plunger very slowly and dispense beer quickly for best results.
